Computer networks and internet technologies

Basic principles of data exchange. Serial communication. Computer communication basics (OSI model, TCP/IP model). Network devices. Local area networks. OSI model protocols used to form the local area network. Direct connection of two computers, connecting more than two computers using hubs, switches and wireless access points. IP address scheme and TCP/IP as a fundamental Internet protocol. Routing basics: RIP routing protocol. MAN and WAN networks. Connecting to the Internet. ADSL, cable and dial-up modems.

Modern programming concepts

The review of modern programming concepts – objects, classes and other object oriented concepts, modularity, using of function library. Basic design and programming of modern applications with graphical user interface. Demonstration of illustrative examples. Integrated visual tools for application development. Recommendations for literature, code examples and other useful materials on internet. Realizations of simple applications.

Course outline

Databases

Basic principles of databases. Relational data base and database management system. Basic concepts of relational database and relational data model – relations (tables), attributes, key attributes, and connections between relations. Databases implementations. Basic principles of data modeling, data storage, constraints and data integrity. Standard Query Language SQL for data retrieval and object creating for databases. Design and development tools for databases. Simple databases applications. Using SQL in program environment.

Interesting Informatics for Elementary Schools

Initially, it was announced in the application as Seminar on multimedia teaching materials preparation. Beside the preparation of multimedia teaching material, we identify the need to present interesting examples in teaching informatics. It is a reason why we changed the name of the course into Interesting informatics. Topics are: Computer assisted document and multimedia creation – options to demonstrate capabilities of using personal computer for authoring printed and digital content; selection of attractive examples for printed documents (text processing, image editing, graphic authoring) and for multimedia digital content (images, animations, sound, video).

Programming – algorithms and programs – “I know what I want, but how to say to computer to do it”, selection of interesting programming problems for teaching programming structures and techniques – simple computer games.

Computer networks – how and where to go to Internet (“contents” of the Internet, connection options, searching and content sources, using Internet services for communication, potential risks).
