Preface

Modeling and computer simulation are becoming more and more important in various kinds of research in the domain of physics, engineering, biology, medicine... This rising trend is present due to the constant improvement of computer power and accessibility of proper software simulating tools.
Simulation involves experimenting with real systems models. Reasons for using a simulation depend on its appliance area. In engineering, simulation methods assure useful observations in early stages of designing. In some technical appliances, simulation is the only safe method in early explorations. During a system development, simulation secures faster, more effective and cheaper obtaining of results rather than experimenting and testing real systems. Simulation provides wider range of conditions than observation of real systems. Proper use of simulation technique cannot be separated from intelligent using of mathematical model.
This book can be used by students with little or no experience in modeling and computer simulation but with some knowledge in mathematics (differential equations in mathematical modeling). The book purpose is presenting basic principles in modeling and simulation through appropriate examples using modern simulation software.
The first part of the book is used for introduction. A short introduction in modeling and simulation of dynamic systems is given here. Also, modeling and simulations goals and applications are presented. The other topics in this chapter are: types of mathematical models, procedures for modeling and simulation of dynamic systems, algorithms for numerical solving of differential equations and their implementation in simulation software, simulation examples and their preparation (based on mathematical-differential equations models, state-space, transfer function, block diagram or bond graph models).
The second part of the book describes modeling and simulation of dynamic systems using bond graphs. Theoretic foundations for modeling and simulation of mechanical, electrical, electro-mechanical and hydraulic systems using bond graphs are given here. Also, forming state space models using bond graphs is explained. An example of model which is a combination of block diagrams, equations and bond graphs is also presented.
Next part explains analysis, modeling and simulation of dynamic systems using MATLAB. This chapter handles working with transfer functions, state space models, evaluating system response, generating root locus plots and frequency characteristics, stability analysis,... Conclusions are illustrated using simulation results (derived from using MATLAB commands) based on system’s time response.
The fourth part deals with preparing simulation models for program packages oriented on block diagrams and adequate simulation of various dynamic systems. Basic problems are given first, followed by modeling and simulation of advanced and more complex problems (nonlinear dynamic system, ballistic problem, deterministic chaos, hydraulic system, electro-motor,...). Finally, the most complicated systems (domino-effect, plane flight) are described.
The fifth chapter gives tutorial for using software package 20SIM which is designed for modeling and simulation of dynamic systems and which allows preparing simulation models in the form of block diagrams, equations, bond graphs and their combination. Also, the most common MATLAB instructions are briefly described. Finally, software packages VisSim and SIMULINK and examples of their use are given.
This user’s guide is dedicated to the students of Faculty of Electronic Engineering and represents assessed textbook for course Modeling and simulation, and can be used also for other courses where mathematical models and proper simulations are needed. Also, students of other technical faculties, engineers and specialists in related areas can use this book.
