The manuscript “Computer networks and data transmission” contains 381 pages plus XII pages . The textbook contains 15 chapters and the section Bibliography with 18 references.
Chapter 1, “The history of communicational networks”, pp. 1-21, briefly describes the history of communication networks and their development.
Chapter 2, “Introduction to data transfer”, pp. 32-39, analyzes the communication model and complexity of network hardware and software.
Chapter 3, “Data transfer techniques”, pp. 40-89, deals with communication modes related to serial synchronous and asynchronous data transfers, and types of modulation ASK, FSK, PSK, QAM, PCM etc.
Chapter 4, “Functional link level”, pp. 90-136, concentrates on services provided by the link level of ISO-OSI model.
Chapter 5, “Network level”, pp. 137-154, explains the role of network level in ISO-OSI model. Communication networks of type X.25, Frame Relay, ATM and ISDN are also described.
Chapter 6, “Routing”, pp. 156-167, discusses the routing strategies of the type fixed routing, flooding and random routing.
Chapter 7, “Networking”, pp. 168-176, is devoted to communication standards that cover OSI model for LANs. Different LAN topologies of type star, ring and bus are analyzed.
Chapter 8, “Network components”, pp. 177-209, describes the basic function of communication device, such as repeater, bridge, router and hub.
Chapter 9, “Ethernet”, pp. 210-225, presents the IEEE standards that relate to MAC and LLC of Ethernet. Also, the types of Ethernet from the aspect of data transfer speed, are analyzed.
Chapter 10, “TCP/IP”, pp. 226-248, explains the basic features and principles of TCP/IP protocol.
Chapter 11, “Local area networks”, pp. 248-267, analyzes the property of LANs and defines some performance metrics.
Chapter 12, “Cellular wireless networks”, pp. 268-295, discusses the principle of cellular systems and analyzes the principle of 2G cellular networks.
Chapter 13, “Satellite communications”, pp. 269-309, deals with specifics of satellite communication and identifies the basic satellite types (LEO, MEO and geostationary).
Chapter 14, “Modem”, pp. 310-361, describes the principle of operation of modulator-demodulator, called modem. Different technique for error detection and correction are analyzed, too.
Chapter 15, “Data acquisition systems”, pp. 362-382, points to the crucial characteristics of data acquisition systems and identifies the functions of basic building blocks.
This book is intended for undergraduate students whose majors are: Electronics and Telecommunications of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering in Nis, and for students whose major is Automatic Control and Computer Engineering at The Electrical Engineering Faculty of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This book can also be used by all others who are active at the field of Computer Network and Data Communication.
